World of Social Networks

While not perfectly accurate (e.g. Mixi is missing for Japan) I stumbled upon an attempt to map the social networks that dominate in each country around the world. May be this motivates someone else to setup a page where people can collaboratively update/work on the map.

Le Monde (France) ran a map in 2007 that showed some similar data, and explained that the ranking was based on millions of hours per month spent on each site in each country/region:

They credit "Valley Mag" as the source, so I am guessing it was really an older (more useful) version of the Valley Wag map you are mentioning.

Really good find with that map. It's interesting to see how huge parts of the world don't have an identifiable social network. Most likely its because Internet access isn't universal but it could also mean potential for a new geographical social network target.
