Position: Postdoctoral Scholar/Project Manager for the China Biographical Database 中國歷代人物傳記資料庫

Nature of Research: The China Biographical Database (CBDB) is an online relational database with biographical information about approximately 120,000 individuals as of 2013, primarily from the seventh through nineteenth centuries. The data is meant to be useful for statistical, social network, and spatial analysis as well as serving as a kind of biographical reference. The Post-Doc Manager assists with the long term goal to include all significant biographical material from China’s historical record and to make the contents available free of charge, without restriction, for academic use.
Responsibilities: The China Biographical Database project proposes to make a one year post-doctoral appointment (open to ABDs) beginning summer 2013 to manage its text-mining work, liaise with participating institutions in China and Taiwan and collaborating scholars globally. The manager is also responsible for technical tasks for the project, including developing and maintaining the CBDB API to allow system interoperability between CBDB and other projects, executing developed Python programs to extract biographical information from Chinese historical texts, and contributing to modeling biographical information in a relational database in order to support advanced queries.
Skills and requirements:
- Command of spoken and literary Chinese and English
- Being able to communicate with both humanists and technicians
- Strong management skills in managing relational databases. Experience in Microsoft Access/MySql and VBA is a plus.
- Experience in developing web applications. Working knowledge in Python/PHP, XML, and HTML.
- Good knowledge in regular expressions and in handling Unicode texts.
- Ph.D. or MA in Chinese History, Computer Science, or a related field.
Additional Qualifications: Experience with or interest in text-mining technologies. Interest in Chinese history and biography.
