Gary King recently sat down for a podcast interview to discuss his recent work with IQSS affiliates Benjamin Schneer and Ariel White on the influence of news media on US public discourse in political and policy-related topics.King, Director of IQSS, spoke with Sarah Crespi on the Science Magazine Podcast about his work with Schneer and White on the study detailed in their recent paper, "How the news media activate public expression and influence national agendas." In their experiment, King, Schneer, and White sought to measure the effect that news and social media have on nationwide discourse in the US on policy and politics. In the interview, King explains how the research team worked in cooperation with journalists to study the effects of real-world articles, in order to "make our study as realistic as possible." What he and his co-authors have built, he explains, "is not only science article, but a platform on which we can run other experiments."
