Akio Sone has an interestingly varied background. From 1981-1985 he worked as a cataloging librarian at The National Science Museum in Tokyo, Japan. He then came to the United States, where he received his Ph.D. in Geography, from Syracuse University in 1993. After receiving his degree in the States, he traveled back to Japan where he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Socioeconomic Planning, at the University of Tsukuba from 1994-1999. Akio then returned to the United States in 2000 and has since been working on the VDC Project at Harvard University.
