I am interested in how a linguistic description like 'apple' is linked to an actual object in the world by the use of certain linguistic strategies. For example, in English, the definite article 'the' or the demonstrative 'that' is what serves as the bridge between a description and an object. Cross-linguistically, we find a wide range of strategies for reference, from definite articles like English to bare nouns in Mandarin, and various syntactic operations in other languages. I am interested in investigating the strategies used in different languages experimentally, collecting comprehension data on anaphoric and deictic references.
