Gauri Kartini Shastry is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Economics. Originally from India, she grew up in Indonesia and Singapore and came to the U.S. to attend Brown University in 1998. Her experiences in countries such as India and Indonesia cemented her interest in economic development. Kartini's main research fields are development economics and public economics. Her research focuses on education in India; some of her current research projects include 1) a study of how students and teachers respond to a school meals program in Mumbai, India and 2) how information technology outsourcing has impacted the demand for education across urban areas in India.
