GIS for Humanities and Social Sciences (CGA)

This full-day workshop offers hands on instruction on learning and applying several GIS and mapping techniques commonly used by those practicing in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The workshop will include discussion and interactive exercises aimed to contextualize the usage of geography and maps for each participant's individual research or teaching interests.

Specifically, the workshop will cover:

  • Introduction to and examples of the digital spatial humanities and spatial social sciences
  • Overview of a diverse range of spatial software, both desktop and web-based, including GIS
  • Create, edit, query and analyze geographic datasets (using QGIS, ArcGIS Online, and Google Earth)
  • Georeferencing historical maps 
  • Downloading and transform U.S. census data tables into spatial data layers
  • Producing map compositions, and sharing geographic data for collaborations

Fee for the 1-day program is $25 for people with a valid Harvard ID, and $350 for others.

The workshop will be taught on the Harvard campus in Cambridge in a location to be announced (Harvard health guidelines permitting) Friday, December 10th from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. EST.
