For a week in November of 2018 the CGA’s Jeff Blossom was in India teaching cartography and GIS workshops as part of the Out of Eden Walk project. Over a week’s time Jeff gave the following lectures and hands on workshops:

Creating Maps – A 50 minute lecture and mapping exercise given to 180 5th – 8th grade students at the Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Mumbai, and to 60 9th grade students at the Sri Sri Academy in Kolkata.

Using Geographic Information Systems - A two hour session on GIS, geocoding, and thematic web map creation was given to 58 students at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. View the slides and workshop agenda.

Understanding Human Migration using Cartography – A lecture given to 30 Harvard alumni and their 20 children ranging in ages from 11 to 17 at the Taj Land’s End Hotel conference room in Mumbai. Hosted by the Harvard Business School India Research Center.  View the slides.

Using Geographic Information Systems - A three hour session on GIS, geocoding, and thematic web map creation was given to 9 professional researchers at the India Research Center, Mumbai. View the workshop agenda.

Mapping Tools for Journalists – A presentation to 19 journalists participating in the National Geographic Out of Eden Walk Slow Journalism Workshop in Kolkata.

In addition, Jeff spent a day walking Kolkata with Paul Salopek (story map on this coming soon); co-presented with Paul to 110 students and faculty at NSHM College; and was interviewed for a segment titled “Mapping Human Migration” on Live History India’s “Tales and Trails” series. View the 18 minute video.
