SUMMARY:David Beavers (APRW)
DESCRIPTION:
	Speaker

David Beavers, "Causes and Consequences of Americans' Dwindling Trust in the Media"

	Abstract

Across various survey firms, question wordings, and modes, the evidence is overwhelming that Americans’ trust in media has declined precipitously since the mid-20th century. Americans' decline in trust in the media has outpaced the decline in trust in other institutions in the U.S. and exceeds that of all other wealthy industrialized democracies. In this project, I explore the causes and consequences of Americans' dwindling trust in the media in three parts. In a qualitative first part, I examine the historical institutionalization of American journalism to contextualize the modern media's vulnerability to elite criticism. In a second part, I construct an over-time measure of elite rhetoric about the media between 1972 and 2022. In the third part, I conduct a survey experiment to examine the causal effects of declining media trust.

The American Politics Research Workshop (Gov 3004) presents an opportunity for graduate students and Harvard faculty to present and receive feedback on their current research. The workshop highlights key theoretical and empirical findings from Harvard affiliates on topics related to American politics.

All interested Harvard affiliates are invited to attend.
