DESCRIPTION:
Presentation by Allen Carroll, Program Manager, Storytelling, ESRI

Abstract
<drupal-media data-entity-type="media" data-entity-uuid="72af3497-07f8-49af-b98e-caba6b477a8d" data-view-mode="hwp_small" data-align="left"> </drupal-media>
The advent of the digital age has revolutionized the creation, distribution, and consumption of maps. The web created enormous opportunities for storytelling, enabling maps to dance and weave, partnering with other multimedia elements—photos, video, audio, text—to tell countless tales about our world. Telling Stories with Maps: Lessons from a Lifetime of Creating Place-Based Narratives bridges both the analog and digital realms, showcasing how maps themselves tell stories and enrich narratives by providing context and insight. Richly illustrated with examples from traditional maps to the latest digital visualizations, the book is intended as a guide for anyone interested in the powerful storytelling potential of maps.

Speaker Bio

Allen Carroll is Program Manager for Storytelling at Esri. He founded Esri’s StoryMaps team, which provides web tools that have been used by hundreds of thousands of individuals and organizations to tell place-based stories combining interactive maps and multimedia content. He leads an editorial team that supports a global community of digital storytellers. Allen came to Esri after 27 years at the National Geographic Society. As its chief cartographer, he was deeply involved in the creation of the Society’s renowned reference and wall maps, globes, and atlases. He led the creation of the Seventh and Eighth editions of the World Atlas, incorporating innovative thematic maps into the editions and integrating them for the first time with interactive web resources. He spearheaded the publication of many new maps and websites, ranging from decorative wall maps and supplement maps for National Geographic magazine to special projects featuring biodiversity, conservation, and indigenous cultures. He is author of Telling Stories with Maps, published by Esri Press in June 2025.

This presentation will also be streamed remotely via Zoom. Click here to register and receive the link for the Zoom session.
