My research is in the semantics of natural language: how utterances come to have the meanings they do, and how meaning interacts with linguistic structure. Currently I am studying how the behavior of polarity items—words like *ever* which can only appear in certain places, like following *before* but not *after*—differs between English and other languages, and am running online experiments to gather data and test hypotheses about these differences.
