1:30pm to 3:30pm

Location:

Northwest Building
REGISTER March 30, 2018 - 1:30pm to 3:30pm Leader/Instructor Stacy Bogan NON-HARVARD REGISTER One popular use of remote sensing is the analysis of land use change over time. In this workshop, students will learn how to search for and download free Landsat data; how to prepare these data for analysis; and how to examine land use change over time. We will be using ArcGIS and IDRISI Selva, both of which are available to Harvard affiliates on the CGA website. This class is meant to build off of introductory GIS and Remote Sensing workshops. Location:

Northwest Building
REGISTER October 13, 2017 - 1:30pm to 3:30pm Leader/Instructor Ben Lewis NON-HARVARD REGISTER The Center for Geographic Analysis is developing WorldMap (http://worldmap.harvard.edu/), an open source platform designed to encourage collaboration between researchers who need access to geospatial information. Despite the many ways in which research materials can now be accessed and shared across the web, the methods suitable for geospatial materials lag. The reasons are many and interconnected: 1) the sparse implementation of standards, 2) the size and complexity of geospatial datasets, 3) the... Read more about Worldmap Introduction

Database Design for GPS/GIS Applications

1:00pm to 3:00pm

Location:

B127 52 Oxford St - Northwest Building
Database design is a key step in GIS data modeling. GIS data modeling is the process of representing specific aspects of the real world in a computer. This workshop gives an introduction to GIS data modeling and the 3 phases of database design: requirements analysis, schema refinement, and physical database design. It also covers specific design considerations when capturing data for GIS applications using GPS. Students will design a Geodatabase for use in ArcPad on the Trimble GeoXT. Taught by Nicole Alexander

Version Control with Git

1:00pm to 3:00pm

Location:

CGIS Knafel K018
Version control software allows you to save “versions” of files -- scripts, text files, web pages, data, etc. -- which show the changes that were made to the files over time, and allows you to backtrack if necessary and undo those changes. The ability alone – of being able to compare two versions or reverse changes, makes it fairly invaluable when working on larger projects. Even more so when collaborating in research groups. This hands-on workshop will take you through the steps of using Git via the GUI GitKraken and Github, to track changes, revert to older versions, and share your...
