Become an Affiliate

iqss affiliatesIQSS welcomes requests from scholars who participate in the life of the Institute to become affiliates. Opportunities to participate in the life of the Institute include attending seminars, giving talks to the IQSS commmunity, working with IQSS graduate student affiliates, co-authoring or otherwise collaborating with IQSS affiliates, serving on committees, reviewing scholarly grant applications, attenting events, and sharing in a pot of coffee in the IQSS "Quantina" kitchen. Below is a list of affiliations and requirements. Affiliation also allows graduate students and Harvard Faculty to apply for funding or access IQSS-based services, such as Sponsored Research Services. Information For Becoming an Affiliate:

Faculty

Harvard Faculty Affiliates are able to apply for funding through IQSS's Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URS), and may request the services of the IQSS Sponsored Team when applying for sponsored research grants. They are also placed on an email list inviting them to community activities, talks, and events.  Please note that faculty affiliates may be called upon to participate in reviews of scholarly grant applications.

Requirements:

  • Faculty who participate in the life of the Institute, broadly defined as attending seminars, advising or otherwise working with IQSS graduate student affiliates, giving talks to the IQSS community, co-authoring papers, or otherwise collaborating with other IQSS affiliates are eligible to be listed as IQSS affiliates. If you are a Harvard faculty member who fits these criteria or otherwise believe you contribute to IQSS’s mission, please send an email identifying yourself, your department, and your research interest(s) to affiliation@iq.harvard.edu.

Non-Harvard Faculty Affiliates

In order to become a Non-Harvard Faculty Affiliate, you must be working closely on an active research project with a Harvard Faculty member who is an IQSS Faculty Affiliate. Non-Harvard Faculty Affilliates are placed on an email list inviting them to community activities, talks, and events.

If you meet the above criteria, please send the following required documents to affiliation@iq.harvard.edu:

  • A letter of support from the Harvard Faculty Affiliate.
  • An email identifying yourself, your institution and department, and your research interest(s).

Graduate Student Affiliates

Graduate Student Affiliates currently enrolled in a doctoral program may apply for travel grantsresearch grantsdissertation awards and shared office space (which is very limited and available only to graduate students in their G3 year or later). 

Send the following required documents to affiliation@iq.harvard.edu

  • A letter of support from an IQSS Harvard Faculty Affiliate.
  • An email identifying yourself, your department, and your research interest(s).

Please note: As IQSS is a research institute and not a degree program, it is not involved with Harvard Admissions; graduate students who are affiliated with IQSS must already be enrolled in a degree program. 

Fellows

Fellows must have a bachelor’s degree and existing and ongoing collaborative relationship with a current Harvard-appointed IQSS Faculty Affiliate.

Send the following required documents to Bonnie O'Brien, Director of HR:

  • Request for affiliation written by and sent directly from an IQSS-affiliated Harvard Faculty Member;
  • Proof of Bachelor’s degree;
  • Current CV;
  • Research Statement indicating what project you will be working on while at Harvard

Visiting Scholars

Visiting Scholars, who wish to spend time collaborating with Harvard colleagues and making use of Harvard resources while on leave, must be self-funded and have an existing and ongoing collaborative relationship with a current Harvard-appointed IQSS Faculty Affiliate and an appointment in another institution. 

Send the following required documents to Bonnie O'Brien, Director of HR: 

  • A letter of support from a Harvard-appointed IQSS Faculty Affiliate indicating that your presence at IQSS will be beneficial to the Faculty Affiliate and others in the Harvard Community.
  • A letter from your home institution confirming your current, active appointment and leave status.

Associates

The appointment of Associate allows for an unpaid affiliation with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. It is designed for an individual whose credentials and interests align with a specific institutional objective, and it permits the appointee to participate in certain activities of the unit conferring the appointment.

Send the following required documents to Bonnie O’Brien, Director of HR:

  • Request for affiliation written by and sent directly from an IQSS-affiliated Harvard faculty member;
  • Current CV;
  • Research statement indicating what project or collaborations the Associate will be working on while at Harvard; and
  • Description of the Associate’s current full-time employment outside of Harvard.

An Associate appointment may not exceed 12 months. Reappointments require the submission of a report delineating activities undertaken during the previous appointment term, a research statement outlining the project to be undertaken during the new appointment term, and an explanation of how the forthcoming project aligns with the mission of IQSS.
