Whether you are interested in learning new software skills or broadening your knowledge on social science-related topics, we are here to help you learn.

Here are some opportunities to get started.

Workshops hosted at IQSS in collaboration with other departments

  • Applied Statistics Workshop - a weekly, cross-disciplinary tour of Harvard's statistical innovations and applications
  • Tech Science Seminars - weekly series on Technology Science from expert researchers, public interest groups, and others on the social impact of technology and its unforeseen consequences.
  • Program on Political Economy  - a seminar series on formal and quantitative political research that integrates the study of economics and politics.
  • Working Group in Political Psychology - a semimonthly interdisciplinary forum for psychological and empirical research that examines the microfoundations of citizen and elite behavior
  • Research Workshop in Political Economy  - examines how institutions affect political and economic outcomes. (Note: this is a closed workshop.)

Dataverse Training

The Dataverse Project team provides weekly assistance to Harvard researchers with uploading, sharing, and finding data using the Harvard Dataverse. Open Office Hours begin with a Dataverse software demo, followed by one-on-one support for any questions you might have.

Workshops provided by Data Science Services (DSS)

We offer a series of free workshops on research tools to members of the Harvard and MIT communities. The workshops run throughout the fall and spring semesters and are held in our training lab (K018) in the lower level of CGIS north. Currently, we offer the following workshops:

  • R introduction
  • R regression modeling
  • R visualization
  • R data wrangling
  • Python introduction
  • Python web-scraping
  • Stata introduction

Workshops provided by the Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA)

The CGA offers opportunities to learn GIS-related skills both on campus and online. In addition to Harvard courses that students can take for credit, non-credit opportunities include:

  • Self-guided video tutorial series
  • GIS Institute (two-week training institute held every semester. Research proposal required)
  • Cartography Workshop (One day workshop held every SPRING semester)
  • GIS for the Humanities and Social Sciences (One day workshop held every FALL semester)
  • Basic Introduction to GIS (Two-hour workshop held every semester)
