Angelo Dagonel, "Budget Prioritization in the American Immigration Bureaucracy"

Abstract

My dissertation examines how enforcement and service is prioritized in the bureaucratic agencies that implement immigration policy.  This chapter of my dissertation looks at prioritization in budgeting across time and across different agency activities and programs.  I'll discuss how I plan to use theories of federal budgeting to guide an exploration of two data sets: program-level budget requests, and budget justification hearings. Request data should suggest what activities are prioritized in dollar amounts and personnel.  Speech from hearings data should suggest why agency executives prioritize certain policy objectives over others.

The American Politics Research Workshop (Gov 3004) meets all academic year, Tuesdays, 12:00 - 2:00 PM, in CGIS K354. This workshop presents an opportunity for graduate students and Harvard faculty to present and receive feedback on their current research. The workshop highlights key theoretical and empirical findings from Harvard affiliates on topics related to American politics.

All interested Harvard affiliates are invited to attend.
