Roland Pongou
Roland Pongou is a Visiting Scientist in the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard and an Affiliate of the Harvard Institute for Quantitative Social Science. He is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Ottawa in Canada, and an affiliated faculty member of the African School of Economics in Benin. He received his PhD in Economics from Brown University. He also has graduate training in Mathematics and Demography. He was formerly a Fellow in the Takemi Program in International Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, a PDGA Scholar at Harvard, and a Visiting Scholar in the MIT Department of Economics. Professor Pongou's primary research interests are in political economy, health, economic development, and economic theory. His work focuses on the microeconomic analysis of formal and informal institutions, and on the effects of institutions on various aspects of individual and societal wellbeing. His recent research uses matching theory to study the effect of ethnic integration on sexual network formation and the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in multiethnic societies. He has also published research that addresses questions in voting and political design, fairness in organizations, and gender inequalityn Professor Pongou's analytical approach combines microeconomic theory, game theory, social network theory, and quantitative methods. He has also published research that contributes to these areas. He is a recipient of multiple awards and fellowships. He is a member of the Econometric Society, the American Economic Association, the Canadian Economic Association, the African Finance and Economic Association, and the Population Association of America.
